If necessary, you can review the the IPlan Assignment sheet here. Complete the process shown in the diagram below by following the steps and answering the questions for each step.
a. Review your journal entries RJ1 and RJ3 for your original assessment of your needs and strengths as well as the needs of your students.
b. Complete the Teaching Self Assessment based on one of the lessons you taught last week. Be sure to write down specific evidence from either your lesson plan or your memory of your enactment for each assessment you give. Use a highlighter to identify areas of your teaching/lesson that were either below standard or that you feel needs improvement.
a. Review your school improvement document(s). (If you forgot them, download a SALT visit.)
b. Synthesize your review by completing the following table as best your can:
What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?
RIBT Standard/Element Addressed?
1.
Time Management
Better time management on my part could help my students because if I better plan my time, more time could be spent productively working and learning. Often, I plan lessons too long or too short because I am very new to block scheduling. I have always been familiar with 40-50 minute periods, so planning for a much longer period is difficult, but experience is helping.
Better time management could help my school because the students could be better educated and have more time spent working and learning. This could help overall test scores, as well as reducing stress and maintaining order.
RIBTS 6.4
2.
Maintain the availability and use of high quality technology.
This could help my students because technology is part of all of their lives and could be very helpful for both now and the future. Technology could be a helpful and versilite tool in teaching, using powerpoints, smartboards, animations etc, but it could also be helpful for the students to have experience with the technology because more likely than not, they will use it in the future, whether its for personal use, college, or work.
This could help my school because it could help students be better prepared for the future. It could help to raise test scores and increase education as well.
RIBTS 2.4
3.
Enforce existing school policies consistently.
This could help my students because it could help show an equality among all student and show that the same rules apply to everyone. It could help to stop distractions (cell phones and ipods), which might increase attention to learning. In addition, it could promote a safer and healthier environment.
This could help my school by setting a normalcy and providing a safe environment for learning.
RIBTS 6.1, 6.2
4.
Use Inquiry more often
This could help my students because it will help them to think at a higher level, and help them to learn more than just facts. They will have more of an opportunity to use their knowledge and possibly understand concepts better.
This could help my school by providing the students with a better educational experience. Not only could they preform better on tests, but use of inquiry is also one of many goals that my school would like to reach.
RIBTS 5.1. 5.4, 5.5
Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.
I. Professional Development Goal
My professional development goal is to work on classroom management strategies and and to also enforce existing school policies consistently.
The reason that I selected this goal, is because if any part of my teaching strategies need help, it would probably be classroom management. Coming in as a student teacher, my CT requested that I keep her policies and practices in place. I guess this was the most difficult for me because I kind of had my own idea of how to run a classroom, and her way definitely isn't the way I would have done things. So it is hard for me to adapt to her strategies and practices, when some simply just don't work in specific classroom situations. I would like to create a classroom that works and is productive to learning. I want clear goals, and classroom policies. I want these things to be known and practiced to make for a well run, safe classroom.
In addition, our school has been having issues about school policies. For an example, it is a rule that when the bell rings at 7:30am, no ipods, headphone, or cell phones are allowed. This is a rule that should be held school wide, but some teachers allow students to listen to music in their class, or in advisory, or lunch. When they then enter our classroom, we then are the "mean teachers" for not allowing them to use them, and for taking them away if we see them using them. The students end up with mixed messages and continue to use these and disrupt the flow of class. I think that rules should be enforced in every class, or the rule should be altered or changed if need be.
I feel that with these changes, my classroom and the school would be more productive and run much more smoothly. By clearing up rules, this could help my students because it could help show an equality among all student and show that the same rules apply to everyone. It could help to stop distractions (cell phones and ipods), which might increase attention to learning. In addition, it could promote a safer and healthier environment. It could also help my school by setting a normalcy and providing a safe environment for learning.
With these changes, RIBTS 6.1 and 6.2 are addressed.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
The first thing that I plan on doing before the end of the school year to help me with my goal, is to continue to watch other teachers around the school and observe their classes. I think by doing this, I can pick up strategies that may work for me, and ones that I know will not. Here I can get ideas and see first hand how teachers manage their classroom and also deal with situations. I feel that this can really help my goal because I can see a variety of classes, settings, and teachers in real life settings, opposed to reading about it or some other means.
The second thing that I plan on doing before the end of the school year is to talk with colleagues, teachers, professionals etc, to see what they are doing about classroom management. Hearing what other people are doing can give me helpful pointers and ideas. It is often very helpful to hear from experienced individuals, because I am very new at teaching, and their wisdom may be very educational. In addition, I could even have them watch me and criticize me on my teaching. They could possibly tell me things that I am doing correct, incorrect, and possibly offer me some assistance in formulating a classroom environment that I am hoping for. I feel that this could help my goal sufficiently by having people with knowledge and experience offer me assistance and advice.
It would also probably be very helpful to attend a seminar, or some sort of class on classroom management. This could offer support and ideas from professionals as well.
